Basnayake Nilame (Chief Incumbent)
Don Piyatissa Kumarage who was unanimously elected the 11th Basnayake Nilame of the Historic Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya is a businessman by profession. He assumed office by entering the Devale according to tradition
Born on May 13, 1954 at Polonnaruwa, he received his education at the Polonnaruwa Ex- Servicemen’s Camp Maha Vidyalaya and took up business as his profession.
His parents were K. M. Perera and V. Eugene. He is the youngest in a family of four and has two brothers and a sister.
Taking up rice milling as his main business, he later ventured into the business of renting out heavy vehicles.
Kumarage who is married to Indrani Sepalika has three sons and one daughter.
In 1988, he took up residence in Kandy in the interests of his children’s education and soon earned popularity as a renowned philanthropist. From 1980, he got involved in the Kataragama Sacred Area activities and started making immense contributions towards its development projects. He stood for election as the Basnayake Nilame of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devale in deference to requests made by the Maha Sangha and the general public, and was elected to the post uncontested by popular choice.
